A home away from home - complimentary respite in Dubbo
31 Jan 2020
For a limited time only, Catholic Healthcare is offering up to 28 days complimentary summer respite at St Mary’s Villa and Holy Spirit Residential Aged Care Homes in Dubbo.
For carers, respite accommodation means having time for rest and rejuvenation. For their loved ones, it means being supported by 24/7 nursing staff, nutritious meals and comfortable air-conditioned rooms.
It’s also a chance to take advantage of the many activities and outings provided at a residential aged care Home like St Mary’s Villa. Dedicated recreational activities officers plan and create innovative and meaningful activities, tailored to suit individuals and groups that maximise participation and engagement.
For St Mary’s Villa Resident, Eleanor, her passion for gardening has been supported and encouraged since she moved in a year ago.
A courtyard area within the Dubbo Home has become her patch where she is tending the plants under extreme drought conditions.
“I’ve always been a gardener,” says Eleanor. “At St Mary’s I have tried to create our own courtyard sensory garden. There are chrysanthemums, roses, irises, little daisies and a few gnomes for company, one known as Jimmy Boy.
“It’s been challenging with the extreme drought conditions as everything now has to be hand-watered, but I love gardening. To me, gardening is a bit like having a baby. I talk to the plants to help them grow… well if Prince Charles can do it then why not me!”
Eleanor also enjoys the weekly outings from St Mary’s and visits to the Japanese Gardens within Dubbo’s Regional Botanic Garden, along with friend Vona.
“We love visiting the gardens which were recently extended and there are new sections to explore. It is really lovely, there is a fantastic waterfall, Japanese flowers and plants, koi fish in ponds and ducks skimming the surface. It is very serene.”
