It was a two-for-one deal at Villa Maria Fortitude Valley last week, with residents and staff coming together to celebrate the Home’s unique cultural diversity! The Home in Brisbane is embracing cultural-themed monthly events as part of an awareness program. This month, residents were lucky to be involved in two celebrations – an Italian-themed morning tea and a Moon Festival afternoon tea.

Meet Kath Readford OAM, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Lourdes Hospital & Community Health Service, Dubbo. For the past 28 years Kath has supported the Orana region, providing dementia counselling, advice, support and advocacy services. Kath has been pivotal in the work achieved in Dubbo, also setting up the Home Club 20 years ago specifically for people living with dementia.

The team at St Paul’s Residential Aged Care in Northbridge were able to make Mary’s 100th birthday special by organising a beautiful celebration cake. “Mary had a very special day to celebrate her milestone. The day was very cheerful for the other residents and staff, especially during the current COVID-19 lockdown,” says Dan, Residential Manager at St Paul’s.

Meet Djulijana Alachkoska, Registered Nurse for the Home & Community Services team based at Waterloo in south east Sydney. Djulijana is often described as ‘Miss Congeniality’ by her clients and colleagues. “She is an excellent nurse and is very popular with our clients,” says Sister Ruth, Clinical Coordinator for Home & Community Services. “She is always going further in what she is asked to do in her daily care for our clients and this is always done with a smile!”

Each year, Catholic Healthcare puts forward a team to participate in the Grant McBride Memory Walk and Jog. We have a special connection to this event as Grant McBride was a Catholic Healthcare client attending the Warnervale Wellness Centre on the Central Coast. Grant lived with younger onset dementia and sadly lost his battle with the condition when he was just 68 years old.
