As the weather cools and winter illnesses become more common, it is a good time to take a few simple steps to look after your health. As we get older, illnesses such as influenza, RSV and COVID-19 can have a greater impact, but small everyday habits can help you stay well. These include keeping up to date with recommended vaccinations, washing your hands regularly, eating well, staying hydrated and getting plenty of rest can all help support your health. If you are feeling unwell, stay home where possible and avoid visiting people who may be more vulnerable to illness. If symptoms develop, speak with your doctor about the best treatment options. Small steps can go a long way in protecting both your health and independence, and the wellbeing of those around you.
Update from NSW Health
NSW Health advises that RSV and influenza are expected to increase over winter and peak in August 2026, and NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant is encouraging people to keep their vaccinations up to date, including the flu vaccine and the new RSV vaccine for older adults. She has advised that it is not too late to be vaccinated, and doing so can help reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell.
COVID-19 activity in NSW is currently low and stable, but this may change as community protection reduces over time. People aged 65 to 74 are recommended to have a COVID-19 vaccination every 12 months, while those aged 75 or over are recommended to have one every six months.
Simple ways to protect yourself and others
These simple steps can help you protect yourself and reduce the spread of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, influenza and RSV:
- Stay up to date with your recommended influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations
- Stay home if you are unwell and wear a mask if you need to go out
- If you are more likely to become seriously unwell, speak with your doctor about symptoms, testing and whether antiviral medicines may be suitable for you
- If you are feeling unwell, or have tested positive for COVID-19 or influenza, avoid visiting other people who may be at higher risk of serious illness.

Supporting residents during flu season
For residents in our care, vaccination support is part of our ongoing approach to helping people stay well during winter. We continue to encourage and support residents to stay up to date with recommended vaccinations.
Seasonal influenza vaccination: Residential Managers will organise vaccine clinics through visiting pharmacists and/or on-site GP clinics.
COVID-19 vaccination: Residents are encouraged to stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations. Residential Managers organise booster vaccination clinics in each home at least every six months.
