Keeping healthy during winter

As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, you may be inclined to abandon your exercise routine and indulge in comfort food high in sugar, fat, or carbohydrates. Despite these temptations, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle during winter to help boost your immune system and prevent illnesses such as the flu and pneumonia, which are more common during this time of year.

Here are some tips to keep your body and mind in top condition:

  1. Keep up to date with your vaccinations, such as COVID-19 and influenza.
  2. Incorporate plenty of vegetables and lean meat into your diet by using them in warm salads, soups or stews. Include immune-boosting foods such as pumpkin, capsicum, carrot, sweet potato, and other brightly coloured vegetables.
  3. Find out how Catholic Healthcare’s mind+move program can help you reach your health and wellness goals. Call 1300 978 264 or visit https://webchcs.com/mindandmove
  4. Stay hydrated: try herbal teas if you find it difficult to drink enough water.
  5. Keep exercising: a lunchtime walk helps to meet your daily exercise goals and provides vitamin D.
  6. Set yourself some daily household tasks to do each day to get you up and moving.
  7. Protect yourself from illness by washing your hands regularly with soap and water.
  8. Get enough sleep so you can boost your immune system.
  9. Stay connected with friends, family, and the community –socialising is good for mental health.
