April Falls Prevention Month: Better Balance for Fall Prevention

As April approaches, so does a vital focus on falls prevention, particularly for individuals aged 65 and older. In Australia alone, alarming statistics reveal that over 30% of this demographic experience at least one fall annually.

However, proactive measures can significantly reduce this risk, promoting a safer and more secure environment. One of these ways is joining Catholic Healthcare's wellness program, Mind+Move, dedicated to enhancing mobility and minimising falls.

Engaging in 150 minutes of weekly exercise while participating in strengthening and balance exercises will also help you to maintain stability and confidence on your feet:

5 TIPS TO PREVENT FALLS

1. Mobility, Strength, and Balance: Engage in specialised exercise programs aimed at improving balance and strength. Regular physical activity, even just 2-3 hours a week, can yield remarkable benefits. Additionally, consult your General Practitioner to review medications, as certain prescriptions may impact your balance.

2. Environment Matters: Conduct a thorough assessment of your living space to ensure clear pathways. Remove clutter and obstacles that pose tripping hazards. Enhance lighting in dim areas to prevent accidental falls. Invest in comfortable footwear with adequate grip to enhance stability.

3. Smart Daily Habits: Consider the safest and most efficient approaches to daily tasks. Prioritise activities that minimise the risk of imbalance or falls.

4. Nutrition for Strength: A balanced diet is crucial for overall health and fall prevention. Focus on consuming adequate energy and protein to preserve muscle mass. Stay hydrated, as proper hydration supports balance and general well-being. Consult your General Practitioner if nutritional concerns arise.

5. Emergency Preparedness: Establish an emergency plan in case of a fall. Maintain a list of emergency contacts, including family members, neighbours, and medical professionals. Ensure easy access to a phone or wearable emergency alert device for swift assistance.

Together, let's strive to make April a month of enhanced balance, reduced falls, and improved well-being. Stay active, stay informed, and prioritise your safety. By implementing these preventive measures, you can create a safer environment for yourselves and your family, fostering independence and vitality.
