The Brighton brightens the lives of children, one teddy bear at a time

The Brighton brightens the lives of children, one teddy bear at a time

The Brighton is a wonderful, caring retirement community located in the vibrant suburb of Croydon. We shared some of the charitable activities the Craft Group has been involved with late last year, including the Wrap with Love initiative.

The latest project of the Craft Group is bringing some happiness to children in need, one teddy bear at a time.

The Australian Red Cross implemented the Trauma Teddies program in 1991, which enlists the help of volunteers to knit teddy bears for children who have been through, or currently going through, trauma. Some of the trauma recipients of the teddy bears have been through include hospital stays, bushfires, floods, and life as a refugee. Ambulance drivers even carry a supply of Trauma Teddies in their ambulances to comfort children during emergencies. Read more about Trauma Teddies here.

The Brighton Village Manager, Sarita Graham is a proud supporter of the Trauma Teddies program: “I have experienced these Trauma Teddies being used when my granddaughter had to be transported to hospital by ambulance and was given one for comfort. When I visited her after returning home from hospital, she proudly showed me her Trauma Teddy, which has now joined the ranks of her other toy friends.”

The generosity doesn’t stop with the Craft Group. The Men’s Shed – a talented group of male residents who assist residents living at The Brighton – provided the funds to the Craft Group to purchase the wool and knitting needles, from their own fundraising activities.

How Trauma Teddies are made

When the teddies leave The Brighton, they go to ‘finishing school’ to sew the two sides together. This is a delicate process that has to be done carefully, so that the stuffing does not come out. After that, the teddies have their faces and a Red Cross badge sewn on, before heading off on their final destination… to comfort children.
