Railway Hero Warren Turns 100!

This week, Warren, resident at Our Lady of Loreto Gardens on the NSW Central Coast, celebrated his 100th birthday!

The catering team organised a special birthday cake so Warren was able to celebrate his milestone with fellow residents and team members at the Home. Warren was passed the microphone to speak on the morning, and a great day was held.

“Warren is a much-loved resident at the Home and has been living here for two years,” says Bradley, Residential Manager.

Warren was employed with Sydney Trains for over 40 years and was able to travel to virtually every corner of New South Wales and beyond.

“When I started I was a ‘lad gatekeeper’ and by the time I retired in 1981, I had worked my way up to the highest grade station master in NSW, says Warren.”

For his 99th birthday Sydney Trains paid a special tribute to Warren’s service and posted a birthday tribute on their LinkedIn page. Warren was also presented with a certificate of appreciation which is proudly pinned to the wall of his room.

During his days at Sydney Trains, Warren was renowned for his quick-thinking skills and ability to act spontaneously.

“In 1958 I was on duty at Werris Creek,” continues Warren. “On that day, a sudden explosion occurred in the nearby shops. I soon realised there were people trapped in the residences above the burning shops and so I leapt into action. I managed to pull people out from the flames. The Royal Humane Shipwreck Society later commended me for my efforts.”

Warren’s daughter also affirms that her father has always been someone who has gone above and beyond to help people out and has always been a passionate, conscientious person by nature.

“Dad is such a committed person and he worked hard for many years doing what he loved doing – working on the railways,” says Carol, Warren’s daughter.

‘I think that his passionate nature is one factor that has helped Dad live such a long and lustrous life. He was also very active in local communities and clubs, so this kept his mind strong.”

Of the celebrations at the Home, Warren has said, “It was the best day I’ve had in a long time!”

Congratulations Warren from all the team at Catholic Healthcare!

Our Lady of Loreto Gardens is located in Hamlyn Terrace, against the natural bush backdrop of the Central Coast.
