A simple Men's Club conversation at Villa Maria Unanderra set the wheels in motion for one resident’s lifelong dream to take flight.
The Men’s Club, an initiative of Lifestyle Coordinator Siwa Baker, provides residents with a relaxed space to talk, connect and build friendships.
When residents were invited to share a lifelong dream, Desmond Jacob revealed that he had always wanted to fly in a helicopter.
With the Wings Over Illawarra Air Show coming up in Albion Park a few months later, Siwa wasted no time in reaching out to Touchdown Helicopters, sharing Desmond’s 'bucket list' request.
The response from the team at Touchdown Helicopters was extraordinary.
Knowing how much the flight would mean to Desmond, the owner arranged additional ground crew to help him safely on and off the helicopter. The team also organised a private flight and generously extended his time in the air, giving Desmond longer to take in the views and savour every moment.

For Desmond, it was more than he could have imagined. He was deeply moved by the generosity shown by the Touchdown Helicopters team.
After the flight, Desmond had one last request, this time a modest one, an American hot dog with mustard and a latte while watching the aeroplanes and helicopters take off, land and perform throughout the day.
Making an already special day even more memorable, the kindness of strangers continued after the flight.
When the pre-arranged taxi driver arrived, he immediately recognised Desmond from previous trips to hospital appointments and physiotherapy sessions. After hearing about Desmond’s special day, the driver offered to wait for more than two hours at no extra charge. When the day came to an end, he was waiting at the gate to drive Desmond safely back to Villa Maria.
For Desmond, the day fulfilled a lifelong dream. It was also a poignant reminder of the generosity of spirit within the local community, and what can happen when people come together to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
