After a long working life, Eric never expected to find himself without a secure place to call home.
With no permanent accommodation and a lengthy wait to access his pension, Eric moved between hotels and temporary accommodation while trying to find somewhere affordable to live.
‘I had no money. I had nothing. No accommodation, no money for food.’
After months of uncertainty, Eric received a phone call from Catholic Healthcare offering him a room in transitional housing in Waterloo. The accommodation provided immediate stability, and Catholic Healthcare continued supporting Eric to secure a permanent home.
‘Catholic Healthcare saved me, because I was just going nowhere fast,’ he shares.
Today, Eric enjoys the independence and security of having a place to call his own. ‘I have my own personal space. I have my own kitchen, my own fridge, my own washing machine and dryer. I've settled down.’
Just as important as finding housing was finding connection. Eric started attending Catholic Healthcare's social and pastoral groups, monthly afternoon teas and wellbeing programs, where he met people and built friendships. Those connections have grown into a supportive neighbourhood where residents regularly check in on one another.
Eric also values the acceptance and support received from Catholic Healthcare. ‘You accepted me for who I am. You never judged me. You've always been trustworthy, caring and honest,’ Eric says.
With local services, public transport and community activities nearby, Eric is looking forward to improving his health, joining outings and staying connected. But what's most important to him is his peace of mind. ‘Just being relaxed, having the peace of mind that people do care about you, that you don't have to be alone or afraid,’ he adds.
Eric's story is a reminder that home is about more than housing. It's about safety, independence, connection and belonging.
