Stepping on, and out with confidence

After experiencing two falls, Warnervale Wellness Centre client, Judy Shields, found herself feeling anxious about everyday life. Simple things like heading out or even moving around at home no longer felt safe. Like many people, she worried about what another fall might mean for her independence and her confidence.

Judy’s first step forward came after reading about Catholic Healthcare’s Mind+Move program in her local paper. Gentle exercise and falls prevention sounded like exactly what she needed. When she visited Warnervale Wellness Centre, the team suggested starting with Stepping On, an evidence-based program designed to rebuild balance, strength and confidence after a fall.

That decision marked the beginning of a life‑changing journey.

A strong foundation with Stepping On

Stepping On is a 12‑week program focused on improving strength, balance and mobility, while also giving participants practical knowledge to reduce their risk of falls. For Judy, it was about much more than physical exercise.

Each week, she worked alongside others on similar journeys, learning from friendly guest speakers and sharing morning tea together. ‘The guest speakers were so informative and welcoming,’ Judy says. ‘And having morning tea together made it really special.’

Over time, Judy noticed real changes. She felt steadier on her feet, stronger in her legs, and more confident moving through her home and community.

But the impact went deeper.

More than movement: rediscovering joy and connection

Just before starting the program, Judy had lost her husband. ‘I was feeling so lost,’ she shares. ‘I felt as though I was fading away. I was mostly staying at home and only seeing my family.’

Through Stepping On, Mind+Move classes and regular wellness centre activities, Judy began to reconnect with herself and with others.

“The program and Mind+Move have completely changed my life for the better,” she says. ‘It’s a feeling I can’t explain. When I leave class, I’m just happier.’

Judy now attends Mind+Move, seated exercise and circuit classes each week. She feels stronger, more mobile and far less worried about being out and about. The confidence she’s gained has opened the door to new experiences — especially social outings.

Stepping out and staying connected

Judy also loves Catholic Healthcare’s Social Outings and joins around three each month. ‘I love getting out of the house to places I wouldn’t usually go,’ she says. ‘The people are lovely, the facilitators are so kind, and everyone shares their stories.’

For Judy, the social connection is just as important as the physical benefits. ‘The social side is so important,’ she says. ‘We have wonderful days together.’

A journey worth sharing

Without hesitation, Judy recommends the programs to others. ‘Without a doubt, just give it a go,’ she says. ‘I know how I used to feel, and how I feel now. You’ll love it.’

Judy’s story is a powerful reminder that wellbeing is about more than exercise alone. With the right support, confidence can return, connections can grow, and life can feel richer again, one step at a time.
