Buffet dining is a hit with residents

Putting choice and control on the menu: making mealtimes joyful for residents

Catholic Healthcare is transforming mealtimes in its residential care homes by introducing buffet dining, a fresh approach that empowers residents with greater freedom, independence and dignity at every meal. Already, buffet dining has been implemented in 40 serveries across 12 homes, with plans to expand to 17 more serveries in six additional homes by the end of June 2026. This innovative change has fostered a more relaxed and welcoming environment, allowing residents to serve themselves and enjoy their meals at their own pace.

The new buffet dining approach puts residents at the heart of their dining experience. Meals are served progressively, and residents are encouraged to serve themselves, choosing what they’d like and how much. The calm environment allows for enjoyable, sociable mealtimes, and both catering and care teams work together to deliver a seamless experience.

Not only does this approach empower residents to make their own choices, but it also supports independence and autonomy. The visual appeal of the buffet stimulates appetite, especially for those who may be eating less, and residents are more likely to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet when they can select foods they enjoy.

Navigating the buffet and making choices supports cognitive engagement, helping to stimulate memory and decision-making, and boosting confidence in everyday life.

Residents have already shared wonderful feedback. David said, ‘This is a big change. The dining area looks good and well presented. The food is presented well, and everyone can plate their own food.’ Terrence added, ‘The buffet system has improved food service. The food tastes much better. I can pick my own food, which I love.’

These positive comments show how much food matters to our residents. Flexible and engaging dining environments enhance mealtimes and help residents feel respected and in control. Catholic Healthcare with bring buffet dining to even more homes soon.
