5 ways seniors can thrive while living alone

Most older Australians want to stay in their own home as they age. It provides a sense of comfort, cherished memories and independence.

However, as a study by the Australian Institute of Family Studies (2024) highlights, this desire can often bring its own set of challenges. Many older people struggle to balance their desire for independence with the risk of becoming socially isolated.

Living alone does not mean being alone. With the right strategies and a little support, you can maintain your independence while staying safe, active and deeply connected to your community.

Here are five ways to thrive while living independently.

1.    Stay connected emotionally and socially

One of the biggest risks of living alone is social isolation, which can impact both mental and physical health. Staying connected is not just about having a chat. It’s about maintaining a sense of belonging.

  • Routine catch-ups: Schedule regular times for phone or video calls with family. Knowing you have a regular Tuesday night chat can give you something to look forward to.

  • Community or social outings groups: Join local interest groups, whether it is a book club, a group social outing* or a gardening society. Shared interests are the fastest way to build new friendships.

  • Companion support: If you find it hard to get out, Catholic Healthcare offers Social Support services. A friendly support worker can visit for a cuppa, drive you to appointments or accompany you on social outings to ensure you remain part of your local community. We also offer transport options to and from Social Outings.

  • Volunteer services: accessing volunteer services can provide you with companionship and friendship through in-home visits Catholic Healthcare offers free volunteer programs where friendly volunteers provide in-home visits or social chats via a Home Visiting Program and Phone Call Program.

2.    Create a safe and supportive home environment

Confidence comes from knowing your environment is safe. Small, practical changes can significantly reduce the risk of falls and accidents, allowing you to move around your home with freedom.

  • Remove trip hazards: Secure loose rugs, clear clutter from hallways and ensure cords are tucked away.

  • Improve lighting: Ensure stairways, hallways and entrances are well-lit. Sensor lights can be a great addition for night-time safety.

  • Home modifications: Sometimes a simple handrail in the bathroom or a ramp at the back door makes all the difference. Your Support at Home funding can often help cover the cost of these modifications to future-proof your home.

3.    Look after your physical health and mobility

Staying active is the key to maintaining independence. Gentle, regular exercise helps improve balance, strength and mobility, which are essential for everyday tasks like shopping or gardening.

  • Join a group: Programs like our Mind+Move Health and Wellness program offer fun, social exercise activities tailored for seniors, such as yoga, tai chi and gentle exercise.

  • Walking routines: A daily walk, even just around the block, keeps joints mobile and boosts your mood.

  • Allied health support: If you have specific mobility concerns, a physiotherapist or podiatrist can create a personalised plan to keep you on your feet and confident. Our Allied Health services are designed to help you stay fit and strong in the convenience of your own home. 

4.    Support your mental wellbeing and purpose

Thriving is about more than just physical safety. It is about having a sense of purpose.

  • Daily routines: Structure your day with small, achievable goals. This could be tending to the garden, cooking a new recipe or completing a crossword.

  • Lifelong learning: Challenge your brain by learning a new skill, whether it is digital literacy or a craft.

  • Spiritual and pastoral care support: For many, maintaining a connection to faith is a source of great comfort. Our pastoral care teams are available to provide spiritual and pastoral care support and a listening ear, regardless of your background.

5.    Get the right support when you need it

You do not have to wait for a crisis to access support. The Support at Home program is designed to work with you, filling in the gaps so you can keep doing what you love. Whether it is help with heavy cleaning, meal preparation or transport to the shops, having these basics covered means you have more energy for the things you enjoy.
