The final stage of the McQuoin Park Retirement Village development has officially begun, marked by the Turning of the Sod ceremony. This milestone represents not only the physical expansion of the village, but also the deepening of community spirit.
A group of village residents came up with the idea of transforming part of the temporary construction fencing, or hoarding, into a vibrant mural using their artistic talents. When the hoarding was installed, residents noticed that the village administration coordinator was facing a black wall. Led by Iona, a retired art teacher who facilitates the weekly art group, they decided to brighten the space with a mural that reflects village life.
The mural, now displayed at the entry to the community centre, features familiar scenes such as the weekly shopping bus, the village maintenance coordinator, and other cherished aspects of daily life at McQuoin Park.
Iona shared: ‘It was never meant to be a work of art. The idea for a bright and colourful mural in front of our reception area became a reality because our residents didn’t like the idea of a big black wall blocking the view, especially at the entry to our community space.’
More than ten residents took part in the project, including some who had never joined the art group. Within a single day, they outlined the design and painted nearly 40% of the mural reflecting their enthusiasm and teamwork.
This initiative showcases the creativity, collaboration, and strong sense of belonging that defines life at McQuoin Park. It’s the first-time residents have embarked on a project like this, but certainly not the last. With plans already underway for their next mural, we look forward to seeing more of their beautiful work and the continued growth of this vibrant community.
