Residents get fit with the Hummingbird Program

Catholic Healthcare is pleased to offer the Hummingbird Program, a tailored wellbeing initiative designed for Catholic Healthcare residents, developed in collaboration with our physiotherapists and the Wellbeing and Leisure team.

The program aims to support physical and mental health through fun, inclusive, and adaptable movement-based activities.

The program includes five key exercise modules:

  1. Tai Chi (Multi-Sensory) — Gentle, flowing movements paired with aromatherapy, music, and scenic visuals to enhance balance, flexibility, and relaxation.
  2. Seated Zumba: Chair-based dance routines promote cardiovascular health, strength, coordination, and mood—ideal for residents with limited mobility.
  3. Lightweight Dumbbell Workout — Strength training using light weights to support daily functional movement and upper body strength.
  4. Band Weights (Stretch & Resistance Workout) — Exercises using resistance bands to improve strength, flexibility, and joint mobility—adaptable for all fitness levels.
  5. Movement to Music — Engaging routines combining music and movement to boost mobility, balance, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction.

The Hummingbird Program offers a holistic and enjoyable approach to active ageing, enhancing quality of life through movement, music, and community connection.

Here’s what our residents and employees are saying about the program:

‘Good exercise. There is a good variety of exercises that keep us young. Easy to follow and I loved the beach background.’ Father Martin

‘I really enjoy it, even though I have limited mobility in my right shoulder. I love the music and the exercise. I enjoy doing it with lots of other people.' Marion M

‘I enjoy the Hummingbird program. I don’t understand why everyone in the home comes as it is a hoot of a time. I find it very helpful, enjoyable, and easy to follow, and I love the music! I want to keep coming to the program as I know it is also good for me.’ Mary L

'I very much enjoy it. It was my first time joining it today. I found the routine very manageable, and it wasn’t impossible to do. I enjoyed the beach background and the music in today’s video. I look forward to the next one.’ Rosemary I

‘Yes, I enjoyed it very much. I liked the beach background and enjoyed doing the exercises in the videos.' Ronald B

'I enjoy the Hummingbird Program. It’s good exercise as I am kept busy. I love to dance, so the music is perfect for me. I love keeping up with all the exercise classes. I enjoy singing along to the music, as this is all the music I grew up with.’ Mary F
