Supporting families: how Respite and Home Care make a difference

Caring for a loved one is one of the most rewarding things you can do. But let’s be real—it can also be exhausting. Between juggling daily responsibilities, personal commitments, and making sure your loved one is comfortable and happy, it’s easy to feel stretched thin. That’s where respite and home care come in.

At Catholic Healthcare, we believe caregiving should be a shared journey, not something you have to manage alone. Our respite care services offer flexible, short-term support, giving family carers the opportunity to take a break while ensuring their loved ones receive compassionate, professional care at home.

Respite Care Isn’t Stepping Away—It’s Strengthening Your Care

Taking a break doesn’t mean you’re stepping away from your responsibilities. In fact, respite care helps you recharge, so you can continue providing the best care possible. Whether you need a few hours, a few days, or something more structured, we’re here to help.

Who Benefits from Respite Care?

  • Families who need time to rest, attend to personal matters, or simply recharge.
  • Older adults who enjoy meeting new carers and engaging in different activities.
  • Carers looking for peace of mind, knowing their loved one is receiving quality, professional support.

A Carer’s Story – Joan’s Experience

"My mother and I have always been close, and I love being able to support her at home. But having respite care means I can step away when needed, knowing she’s still receiving wonderful care. It gives both of us a sense of balance."

Levels of Care: What Does Respite Care Include?

Every family’s situation is different, so our respite care services are designed to be flexible and tailored to your needs. Whether it’s occasional support or more structured care, we offer:

Level of Care

What It Includes

Basic Support

Light housekeeping, meal preparation, social companionship, and medication reminders.

Personal Care

Assistance with bathing, dressing, and mobility support.

Specialist Care

Nursing care, dementia support, and medication management.

This means that whether you need short-term assistance or ongoing support, you’ll always have the right level of care in place.

How Is Respite Care Funded?

Respite care is more accessible than many people realise, with several funding options available:

  • Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) – Entry-level respite services for those needing occasional support.
  • Home Care Packages (HCP) – Can be used to fund ongoing respite and home care services.
  • Residential Care Fees – When staying in a residential care home for respite, a daily care fee is usually required for the duration of the stay.
  • Private Care Options – Families can also choose privately funded respite services for additional flexibility.

If you’re unsure which funding option is right for you, our team can help guide you through the process. Alternatively, to find out which type of care is best suited to your loved one's needs, you may find this elderly care comparison helpful.

Why Respite Care Supports Both Families and Seniors

Caregiving works best when it’s a team effort, and respite care helps keep that balance in check.

💙 For Family Carers – Taking a break allows you to focus on your own wellbeing, so you can continue caring for your loved one with renewed energy.

🌿 For Seniors Receiving Care – A change in routine and interaction with new carers can be refreshing and uplifting.

👨‍👩‍👧 For Families as a Whole – Everyone benefits from knowing that care is in place, even when plans change.

A Client’s Perspective – Peter’s Story

"When my daughter takes a break, I get to meet new people, try different activities, and enjoy a change of pace—all while still being well cared for."

A Supportive Approach to Aged Care

Seeking respite care for your loved one isn’t about stepping away—it’s about making sure caregiving remains a positive, enriching experience for everyone involved.

Here’s why planning for respite care early makes a difference:

✔️ It’s an extension of your care. Respite care ensures your loved one is happy, comfortable, and well looked after—whether you’re home or away.

✔️ It helps build a long-term support system. By incorporating respite care early, families can create a flexible care plan that adapts as needs change.

✔️ It strengthens relationships. Taking time for yourself means that when you’re with your loved one, you’re fully present, engaged, and refreshed.

How Catholic Healthcare Can Support Your Family

At Catholic Healthcare, we believe that caring for caregivers is just as important as caring for seniors. Our home care and respite care programs are designed to provide peace of mind, professional support, and flexibility—so you can continue to provide loving, high-quality care.
