6 common myths about Home Care – demystified

When it comes to home care, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. Maybe you’ve heard that it’s only for people with serious health issues or that it’s too expensive. These myths often stop people from getting the right support at the right time to live comfortably and independently at home.

At Catholic Healthcare, we’re here to clarify any confusion and help you understand why home care can be the perfect solution for you or your loved one.

Myth 1: Home Care is only for people with serious health problems

Many people think home care is just for those who need full-time medical assistance. That’s not true! Home care is for anyone who needs a little extra support to live well and independently at home. This can include:

✔ Help with household chores like vacuuming and laundry

✔ Transport to appointments and social outings

✔ Meal preparation to ensure you’re eating well

✔ Personal care like dressing and showering

✔ Medication assistance services, including medication management, monitoring and administration.

For example, Margaret, one of our clients, shared:

"I only needed help with shopping and cleaning, but it gave me back so much time, confidence and reassurance. Home care helped me stay in the home I love."

Home care is not about taking over—it’s about giving you the support you need to live life your way.

Myth 2: Home Care is too expensive

The cost of home care is a big concern, but it’s more affordable than you might think!

The Australian Government subsidises Home Care Packages (HCPs) to help with costs. These packages can cover services like domestic help, personal care, transport, and even nursing support.

✔ Income-tested fees mean you only pay what you can afford

✔ Flexible service options help you stay within your budget

✔ Government-funded programs like the upcoming Support at Home program provide additional assistance

If you’re unsure about funding, we can help you understand your options. A financial advisor can also guide you in making the best decision.

Myth 3: Accepting Home Care means losing independence

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about home care. In reality, it’s the opposite. Home care helps people stay independent for longer by offering the right level of support at the right time. Instead of struggling with everyday tasks, you get the help you need while remaining in control of your life.

Take David’s experience:

"With a little help from my carer, I’ve been able to stay in the home I love and keep up with my hobbies. I still feel completely in control of my life."

✔ Need help with gardening? You can still choose what to plant.

✔ Need mobility aids? You decide what works best for you.

✔ Need support a few hours a week? You’re in charge of your schedule.

Home care is about supporting your choices, not taking them away.

Myth 4: Home Care is one-size-fits-all

Home care is flexible and personalised to suit your needs.

Everyone’s situation is different, which is why home care isn’t a “package deal”. You can tailor services to match your lifestyle. Some people just need occasional help, while others require more regular support.

For example:

✔ Emma only needs transport to medical appointments once a fortnight

✔ John requires daily assistance with medication and meal prep

✔ Maria loves social outings but needs help getting there

At Catholic Healthcare, we create individual care plans that adapt as your needs change—so you always get the right level of support.

Myth 5: You don’t get to choose your home care provider

Some people think they’ll be assigned a provider without a say in the matter. That’s simply not true!

When you’re approved for a Home Care Package, you get to choose your provider based on your needs and preferences. If your situation changes, you can even switch providers.

When selecting a provider, consider:

✔ Experience and reputation – Do they have a strong track record?

✔ Services offered – Do they provide the specific support you need today and in the future?

✔ Personal connection – Do you feel comfortable with their carers?

At Catholic Healthcare, we focus on quality, compassion, and flexibility, ensuring you feel at home with your care team.

Myth 6: Home Care means having a stranger in your home

We understand that inviting someone into your home can feel overwhelming at first. But we take care to match you with the right carer—someone who understands your needs and makes you feel comfortable.

Our team members are:

✔ Highly trained and experienced

✔ Kind, respectful, and compassionate

✔ Genuinely invested in your wellbeing

Many of our clients form strong, trusting relationships with their carers. Over time, they feel more like a friend than a support worker.
