Chicks rule the roost at McQuoin Park

Easter Show-winning chickens and a prized sheepdog visited the residents of McQuoin Park recently.

Marzia, the Maremma Sheepdog, accompanied her owner and all-round good guy, volunteer Steve Pringle to help brighten the residents' day.

A monthly visitor to McQuoin Park, Steve devotes much of his time to keeping the residents entertained by his many hobbies.

He has brought in honey from his bees, taken residents on virtual train rides across Australia, helped build model homes and invited the male residents back to his ‘man cave’ for a beer and some healthy chit-chat.

‘I find it very rewarding to bring joy to other people. I love showing others my hobbies and encouraging everyone to be kind to animals,’ said Steve.

Steve presented a funny and informative slideshow on his best-in-state chickens this time around.

Residents learned about King Charles the Leghorn and Queen Camilla the Frizzle Polish, who reside in Cluckingham Palace.

They also found out about Isabella the Blue Andalusian from Spain and other interesting facts about Silver Spangled Hamburgs, among others.

The residents became aware of the preparation necessary to show the birds at the Easter Show—a special diet of pasta, pellets, and oats, followed by scratch mix for dessert and the conditioning of their combs with hand cream.

The crowing of a rooster had many of the residents laughing but the highlight of the day was between resident, Kathleen and 'King Charles.'

‘I feel very emotional watching her reaction” said resident, Pam.
