  • Catholic Healthcare residents celebrate the arrival of spring with the help of Opera Australia

Residents hear a symphony with Opera Australia

The awe-inspiring sounds of Bach and Tchaikovsky filled the majestic warm, spring air at four of our communities in Sydney, with residents treated to an afternoon of entertainment from three members of Opera Australia’s orchestra.

Lucky for us, the clarinet, bass clarinet and trumpet aren’t required during Opera Australia’s current production of Miss Saigon, which is why we were fortunate to be recipients of their social outreach program.

‘It was such a beautiful musical interlude for us all here at The Brighton, and what a wonderful way to welcome spring to our Village with a magical morning of listening to beautiful music. Everyone was so engaged, with many questions asked by residents after the performance. Residents were also keen to find out when they would be returning!’ said Sarita Graham, The Brighton Retirement Village’s manager.

In addition to their performance, the musicians provided an interactive and informative presentation. The Brighton Resident, John Wilkie found the presentation insightful, stating: ‘One of the instruments played was a bass clarinet which some residents had not seen previously. We had the additional benefit of each musician explaining his instrument and something of its history.’

Opera Australia performance at MacKillop House

MacKillop House Norwest residents looked so relaxed, with their performance conducted amongst their beautifully landscaped gardens. The soothing trickle of the fountain complemented the tranquil music played.

In addition to entertaining residents, there was an especially important benefit. It is well documented in numerous studies, that music has the power to reduce agitation in people living with dementia, and even provides a way to connect, even if they are unable to verbally communicate.

Catholic Healthcare is so appreciative Opera Australia so generously provided residents at each location, a beautiful and most enjoyable afternoon. From the bottom of our heart, we thank you!
