Centenarian, Sheila Bell, shares her wisdom

We’ve all heard that old adage of ‘age is just a number,’ and according to new Centenarian, Sheila Bell, it’s absolutely true. Sheila, a resident of Charles O’Neill Hostel in Mayfield, has just reached the epic milestone of turning 100 in January 2023, and when asked how she felt about it, she remarked “I feel no different – I still feel the same way I did when I was younger”.

It’s fascinating to hear about the lives of older people who have seen so much change in their lifetime and have acquired so much wisdom along the way. According to Sheila, “no particular decade has been a favourite because things appeal to you in every age”.

Sheila’s arrival into the world was a little earlier than expected. She was born in Hamilton at a family member’s home, whilst her mother was visiting. Sheila spent her early years growing up near Goulburn on a large sheep property named Pejar Park. Her fondest early memories are looking after her ponies and admiring the work ethic of family members including her tradesman father, Frank and Grandma Mitchell, a very capable woman who ran a tight household. Family holds great importance for Sheila, for the thing she is most proud of in life is “my children, in particular the twins.”

Music has been an important part of Sheila’s life. A talented pianist and violinist, Sheila was invited to teach music at Moss Vale Convent at the tender age of 16. To this day, Sheila finds comfort and enjoyment in music.

Sheila’s advice to young people today is “to learn to listen and take advice – people don’t listen today”. And what’s her advice for living a long life? “Go out a lot and enjoy yourself!”

How did Sheila celebrate?

The Charles O’Neill team wanted to make this amazing milestone memorable for Sheila. The team are aware of Sheila’s love of fine china and high tea being one of her favourite past times, so they organised a high tea party and invited friends, family members and residents to celebrate with her. Suffice to say, Sheila celebrated in style!
