World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2021

Today, 15 June, marks the annual, internationally recognised World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). It represents the day when the world voices its opposition to abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.

WEAAD encourages community participation on a broad scale to draw attention to elder abuse.

Whilst WEAAD is an annual occasion, each and every day presents our collective opportunity to support older relatives, friends and members of the community to live free from abuse.

Elder abuse can take many forms. It can be psychological when family members treat an older person as if they are unable to make their own decisions or threatening eviction from their home. It can be financial where an older person is forced to change their Will or is denied access to their bank accounts. It can come in the form of neglect. It can also be physical or sexual abuse.

Catholic Healthcare supports a free service that provides information and referrals relating to the abuse of older people living in the community across NSW. The NSW Elder Abuse Helpline & Resource Unit acts as a gateway to callers.

We encourage individuals, concerned friends, family members, neighbours and support workers to call 1800 628 221 if they experience, witness or suspect elder abuse is occurring.
