Improving Neck and Back Health in Dubbo

It’s 21/12/2021, 2:00pm at the Home Care hub in Dubbo and eight local clients are ready. It’s the last week of their Neck and Back Health course and everyone is looking forward to the class.

Community Worker, Christina Parkes, ushers them into the exercise room and gets started. This week the focus is on hip and leg stretches, helping to improve blood flow and muscle strength assisting with overall neck and back health.

“The course has been great for both of us,” says Gemma who is participating with her husband. “We have learned a lot about the best exercises for neck and shoulders, as well as back mobility. We now know what stretches we can do which won’t harm us.

“We feel better for it. I signed up for myself, but also to get my husband to come along as he wouldn’t do it on his own, and he needs it more! It’s also very social and we have made new friends. We will be looking out for what other courses are coming up.”

The Neck and Back Health is a six-week course, one hour a week developed by a qualified physiotherapist and occupational therapist. It combines stretching and strength exercises and is designed for anyone 65+. It’s suitable for any fitness level. The Catholic Healthcare team, including a physiotherapist and qualified trainers, introduces clients to a variety of exercises tailored to the individual each week focusing on topics such as posture, upper back flexibility and osteoporosis.

“I’m a big believer in use it or lose it,” says Christina. “These courses are very important. The exercises improve a range of motion, flexibility and can help with conditions like arthritis. The exercises, combined with health education, informs clients of the important of diet and exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“I was delighted to be involved in delivering the course and see the benefits for each participant. It is fantastic to hear the positive feedback on how it has improved their quality of life, while developing new friendships along the way. Everyone was very happy to receive their certificates on completion and are interested in other Home Care health and wellbeing programs.”

Catholic Healthcare can support you on your health and wellness journey.
