Caring for the Carer
16 Oct 2018
Carole is a full time carer for her mother, Betty, who suffers from dementia.
Full time care can be an exhausting and emotional task, and although it is done with love and devotion, it is important for carers to give themselves a chance to rest and relax while ensuring that those in their care are still properly looked after.
Accordingly, Carole takes Betty on a day trip to Catholic Healthcare’s Warnervale Wellness Centre in Hamlyn Terrace on the NSW Central Coast twice a week.
The Centre offers a variety of activities that promote socialisation, health and wellbeing such as board and card games, arts, crafts and group outings, along with a repsite care service. Respite care gives many carers an opportunity to take a break from their day-to-day care responsibilities for a short period of time.
“I was looking for an outing for Mum, something social where they do lots of interesting activities. At the Centre they play games and go on trips. I thought that would be a lovely thing for her to do,” says Carole.
“Mum goes to the Centre from 9.30am to 2.30pm. I take her in the morning and pick her up in the afternoon.”
The time and the activity benefits them both.
“It gives Mum time away from me, and me time from Mum,” adds Carole.
“Mum likes to play Housie at the Centre and enjoys a delicious hot lunch. She mixes well with the other clients and has made some warm friendships. That’s why I keep taking her.”
The comfort and re-assurance that her Mum is being looked after in a caring and friendly environment means that Carole never worries when Betty is visiting the Centre.
“I can pop home and do the chores around the house. I know Mum is safe and in good hands,” continues Carole.
And what does Betty think about her visits to the Warnervale Wellness Centre?
“Well, she likes it! Mum gets in the car with enthusiasm every time and is always happy to go.”
National Carers Week runs from Sunday 14 October 2018 to Saturday 20 October 2018.
