Lourdes Hospital and Community Health Service in Dubbo is an integral part of the health precinct for the western NSW region.

Lourdes provides a continuum of hospital, health and extended-care services and promotes a holistic view of individual and family wellbeing, enabling people to live life to the fullest.

One of the services provided is the highly valued Community Palliative Care.

“This professional team of Registered Nurses provides an outreach service to clients in the community with complex needs relating to their life limiting illness,” says Kaylene Green, Nurse Manager at Lourdes.

“They provide compassionate, professional and coordinated nursing care in the patient’s home. They offer specialist care, advice and support to the patient and their families, often enabling them to stay at home for the duration of their illness.”

Patient, Annie, is spending a few days with the Lourdes palliative care team to help manage her pain following treatment for stomach cancer.

“The biggest word I can use to describe my experience at Lourdes is respect,” says Annie. “The staff help you heal holistically. It doesn’t matter who they are, their role or line of work, they treat everyone with loving care. Everyone is part of a team, and nothing is ever too much.

“The doctors and nursing staff are very thorough and explore every avenue for pain management. They sit and speak with you, they listen to you and work together. The meals are very good, great quality and well presented.”

Once Annie returns home, the Community Palliative Care team will continue to provide support.

“We look after patients across a huge geographical area - from Dubbo to surrounding towns and rural communities. At any one time we are supporting about 92 clients and their families,” says Debbie, a Registered Nurse and member of the Palliative Care team.

“The majority of patients with a life limiting illness want to be cared for in a home setting, rather than in hospital. We aim to make their lives better while we can, discussing different options going forward and helping families in the process. When not visiting a patient’s home, we are always available by phone for advice and consultations.”
