Cost of Care and Accommodation

It's important to understand the different fees and charges before signing up to any aged care services.

If you are entering residential aged care after 14 February 2018, there are three types of fees/charges that may apply according to your circumstances:

1. Basic Daily Care Fee

This is the standard charge for every resident in aged care set by the Australian Government and is calculated at 85% of your single Centrelink pension. The current rate is $50.66 per day. This fee covers costs for meals, laundry and utilities.

2. Accommodation Payment
All residents who the Commonwealth Government determines to be non-supported will pay an Accommodation Payment. There are three options for paying the accomodation payment:

      • Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) - Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) - A lump-sum payment option if you are required to pay for your accommodation in full. This is refunded when the resident leaves the aged care home.
      • Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) - A recurring rental type payment option to be paid in increments if you are required to pay for your accommodation in full.
      • Combination Payment - A payment option consisting of a part RAD payment supplemented with a Daily Accommodation Payment.

Example: An example of a Combination Payment for a $750,000 price may be a RAD of $375,000 and DAP for the remaining $375,000 e.g. $375,000 x 5.96%* รท 365 = $61.23 per day

3. Means Tested Fee
This is a contribution towards the cost of your care. This fee is determined by Centrelink or DVA and may not be applicable to you. If your total assessable income and assets are above the maximum income and assets threshold of a full pensioner, you may be required to pay a Means Tested Care Fee.

This Calculator does not include the Basic Daily Care Fee (your contribution towards care, meals and services). The current standard rate for all residents new to aged care is $50.66 per day (updated twice per annum). The Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) is non-refundable. Refundable Accommodation Deposit (RAD) is fully refundable. The Maximum Permissible Interest Rate (MPIR) is set by the Australian Government (currently 5.96%) and is built into the Calculator.
