Raymond Denman Herps celebrates his 105th Birthday
08 Feb 2016
It’s not every day you celebrate a Birthday and it’s definitely not every day one celebrates turning 105!
Newcastle local, Raymond Denman Herps, ‘Denny’, is a well loved resident from Charles O’Neill Hostel in Mayfield NSW. On his Birthday he was surrounded by his daughter, friends and the wonderful staff of Charles O’Neill Hostel who ensured Denny’s Birthday was celebrated in style.
Denny, also fondly referred to as ‘Uncle’ by the locals in the region, stirred quite the VIP interest for his 105 milestone Birthday. The staff from Charles O’Neill were overwhelmed by the positive interest and gifts received along with a visit from NBN News.
Special acknowledgements from Her Majesty The Queen; The Governor General of Australia, Peter Cosgrove; Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull; Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes and many more local MPs from the Newcastle region were received.
The Labour Member for Newcastle, Tim Crackenthorp, who dropped in for a visit, congratulated Residential Manager, Kristen Grainger and staff for their dedication to residential aged cares services in the local area.
Born in the Upper Hunter Valley, Denny spent most of his early childhood in Denman. Like the majority of most local Newcastle dwellers, Denny once worked for the BHP Steel Factory as a Shunter, retiring from steel works in 1973. He had a few jobs in his early adult life and married young and settled in Mayfield.
“Denny loves his lawn bowls and loves to sing when he’s in the mood and usually does when we have a party. He really is a lovely and gentle man, and we are very lucky to be able to celebrate this day with him,” said Residential Manager, Kristen Grainger.
The Charles O’Neill Hostel was awarded the Innovation Category at the 2015 HESTA Aged Care Awards in acknowledgment for their work with Australians who suffer from mental health problems.
The festivities and candle blowing were a huge success. The dining area was a sea of balloons and residents were treated to music and entertainment, which was enjoyed by all. The staff and Charles O’Neill kitchen crew truly outdid themselves in creating a culinary affair of special treats and dessert.
Charles O’Neill Hostel is home to 40 residents, with a focus on ageing in place. Denny has enjoyed being a resident of Charles O’Neill for over eight years.
