General practitioners, social workers and hospital discharge planners are just some of the health professionals who play a significant role in helping people select appropriate aged care services for their individual needs.
Local Social Worker Amy Colquhon who specialises in physical rehabilitation explained the importance. “Our clients’ needs range from all sorts of high and low care needs and special care needs, and so having an understanding of location and in-house services is an important part to my role. If I can see what the facility is like, I know ahead of time if it is suitable for my client, said Amy Colquhon.
Catholic Healthcare’s, Surry Hills Aged Care service, The Sister Anne Court, recently held a site tour to showcase the newly refurbished residential aged care service. Well known for its proximity to surrounding Sydney hospitals and for its established relationships with health professionals, The Sister Anne Court and Gertrude Abbot have a long history of providing long-term residential care, short-term respite care and pastoral care to the surrounding local community.
Amy Colquhon, toured the newly refurbished service explaining, “It is important to have an idea about the area and the options that the service has to offer when relaying information to our clients. We cannot give recommendations but we certainly need to ensure that we offer various options and have an understanding of what is on offer,” said Amy.
After a recent refurbishment The Sister Anne Court, now offers 68 rooms including 18 brand new premium rooms with ensuites. Providing both long and short-term care, respite care and pastoral care, with convenient access to both shops and public transport, this multi-storey facility (with lifts) offers comfortable private rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms.
The residents at The Sister Anne Court have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of wellness and other programs, as well as having access to an on-site hairdressing salon, visiting pets program, chapel (with daily services), BBQ facilities and spacious communal living areas.
Over recent years, local Financial Advisor Michael Gore has seen an increase in demand for financial advice within the aged care sector, partly because of the overwhelming amount of rules and regulations often seen as confusing for families.
“I deal with a lot of sons and daughters who are time poor and become overwhelmed by the information and paperwork, coupled by their emotions, making it a difficult time when looking into options for their loved ones. For me, seeing the facility and services first hand allows me to go back to my clients with a clearer understanding of what are suitable options for the individual’s needs,” said Michael Gore.
Understanding the client’s needs and familiarising yourself with the area and what the service has to offer, plays a significant part for referrers who often feel an immense sense of responsibility in helping their patients find suitable aged care services.
“The Sister Anne Court really has a sense of community within the area and we have a good relationship with St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and other health providers in the area. I think it has to do with the caring and professional services we provide and relationships built over time,” said Terri Berger Residential Manager of The Sister Anne Court.
