Mater Aged Care, a 36 high care residential aged community, is located in Forbes, a rural town with a shire population of 10,000, and is well supported by the local community.

The Mater provides a homelike environment with an emphasis on privacy, maintaining social relationships and independence with a varied activities program including art classes. A spiritual care co-ordinator is available to assist and support residents and carers.

The residential community comprises 23 rooms with ensuites and 13 rooms with shared bathrooms. An 18-bed dementia-specific unit is located in a secure area.

With a reputation for excellent care, our staff provide warm, personal and professional care for the frail aged members of the community, including people with dementia and palliative care needs. The Mater also supports family members and carers.

Volunteers assist in providing emotional support, companionship and activities for the residents.

Mater Aged Care is accredited by the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.

History

The Mater was originally built as a private hospital in the 1920s. The Sisters of Mercy, Bathurst, ran the small private hospital in the 1950s when the name was changed to the Mater. The hospital was transferred to nursing home status in 1978. In December 2002, the Mater transitioned to Catholic Healthcare.

A major redevelopment of the site was completed in July 2001, and the Mater now provides single rooms for all residents, in a well-designed, homelike environment.

The Mater provides a full range of services to its residents, encompassing physical, emotional, social and spiritual services.

Transport

The Mater is located on the corner of Prince and Johnson Streets, Forbes. The entrance to the facility is through the front door off the car park. A taxi service operates in the local area. Rail bus provides transport to the town from other centres. There is an air service to Parkes with a 30-minute drive to Forbes. Public transport does not operate from Parkes airport, however hire cars are available.
